Academic Council

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, the Academic Council is the principal academic authority of the institution. It is responsible for maintaining academic standards, planning and development of academic programmes, and ensuring quality in teaching, learning, research, and evaluation. The Academic Council functions in accordance with UGC guidelines and in alignment with State Government and affiliating University regulations, while exercising academic autonomy in curriculum design and academic governance.

Functions of Academic Council

    1. Curriculum Design and Academic Standards

  • Prescribe and periodically revise courses of study, syllabi, and teaching–learning methodologies in accordance with UGC norms and contemporary academic requirements.
  • Ensure academic relevance, rigor, and quality in curriculum design.
  • Promote outcome-based education and skill-oriented learning.
  1. Admissions
  • Regulate admissions to various programmes in accordance with:
    • Government policies
    • Reservation norms
    • UGC and affiliating University guidelines
  • Ensure transparency and fairness in the admission process.
  1. Examinations and Evaluation
  • Frame regulations for conduct of examinations and evaluation systems.
  • Approve examination schemes, assessment methods, grading systems, and moderation mechanisms.
  • Ensure maintenance of academic integrity and credibility of evaluation processes.
  1. Research and Academic Development
  • Promote and monitor research activities and academic innovation.
  • Recommend introduction of new academic programmes, diploma/certificate courses, and interdisciplinary initiatives.
  • Encourage research culture, publications, seminars, and collaborations.
  1. Faculty and Academic Appointments
  • Recommend creation of teaching posts and prescribe qualifications for faculty as per UGC norms.
  • Advise on faculty development, academic workload, and professional growth initiatives.
  1. Academic Policy Formulation
  • Frame, review, and implement academic policies related to:
    • Teaching–learning processes
    • Evaluation reforms
    • Credit systems and academic flexibility
    • Student progression and outcome
  1. Others: 
    Determines courses of study, syllabi, and academic regulations independently.
  • Ensures compliance with UGC’s “Specification of Degrees” and national higher education policies.
  • Maintains alignment with State Government and affiliating University norms while exercising academic autonomy responsibly.

General Powers and Responsibilities

  • Advise the Governing Body on all academic matters.
  • Oversee functioning of academic support systems such as libraries, laboratories, and learning resources.
  • Recommend award of honorary degrees or academic recognitions, where applicable.
  • Supervise co-curricular and extra-curricular academic activities.
  • Guide development of academic infrastructure including hostels, playgrounds, and research facilities.
